How to choose online GST software: a checklist for small businesses and CAs

Filing on the portal, preparing files, matching purchases and billing are different jobs. What to look for, and the questions that separate the tools.

Online GST software ranges from billing apps that prepare return data, to platforms that file directly and reconcile at scale. Start with the job you need done, then check the points below.

1. Does it file, or does it prepare?

  • Some platforms connect to the GST portal through a licensed GST Suvidha Provider (GSP) and can file for you.
  • Others prepare the JSON file and you upload it on the portal with your own login. That keeps your portal password and OTP out of the tool.
  • Ask which one a product is, and what it needs from you.

2. Which returns and reports

  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and the annual return if you need it.
  • Matching your purchases with GSTR-2B and IMS actions, with a list of credit at risk.
  • Whether e-invoices and e-way bills are covered, if your turnover needs them.

3. Getting your data in

  • Import from Excel or CSV, and from the accounting package you use.
  • A dry run that shows problems before anything is saved.
  • Exports in a format you can take with you if you leave.

4. When the portal rejects a file

A tool earns its fee on the late night before a due date. Check whether it explains each portal error code in plain words and shows the exact row to change.

5. People and security

  • Several GSTINs under one login, and roles for staff and clients.
  • Two-step sign-in, and a log of who changed what.
  • Where your data is stored and what happens to it if you delete it.

6. Price and support

  • Whether the price is per user, per GSTIN or per return, and what happens above a limit.
  • Whether you can try it first without a card.
  • How to reach a person, and how fast.

Where TurboGST fits

TurboGST prepares and checks files and fixes portal errors. It does not file for you. If you need direct filing or enterprise-scale reconciliation today, use a GSP-connected platform, and the free tools here still help you check a file first.
