FAQ

Questions people ask

When is an e-way bill needed?
Rule 138(1) asks for one before goods move when the consignment value is more than ₹50,000, whether the movement is for a supply, for another reason, or is an inward supply from an unregistered person. The value includes the GST charged in the invoice, bill of supply or delivery challan. You can generate one for a smaller consignment if you want to.
How long is an e-way bill valid?
One day for up to 200 km, and one more day for every further 200 km or part of it. So 200 km is one day and 201 km is two days. Over-dimensional cargo gets one day for up to 20 km and one more for every 20 km or part of it.
Is a day 24 hours?
No. The rule counts each day as the period expiring at midnight of the day after the date of generation. A bill generated at 4 pm with one day of validity stays valid until midnight at the end of the next date.
Can the validity be extended?
Yes. Where goods can't be moved in time because of exceptional circumstances, including trans-shipment, the transporter may extend it after updating Part B. A separate proviso says validity may be extended within eight hours from expiry. The portal shows the exact options on your bill.
Does every State use ₹50,000?
For movement between States, yes. For movement inside a State, a State can set its own limit, so check the State's notification.
