FAQ
Questions people ask
- How many HSN digits do I need in GSTR-1?
- At least 4 digits if your aggregate turnover in the last financial year was up to ₹5 crore, and at least 6 digits if it was more. This comes from Notification 78/2020-Central Tax and the GST portal's advisory on Table 12.
- Can I type the HSN code in Table 12?
- Not from the May 2025 return period. The portal lets you select the code from a list only, and fills in the description from the HSN master.
- Do I report B2B and B2C separately?
- Yes. Table 12 has two tabs, B2B supplies and B2C supplies. B2B must not be empty if you reported B2B supplies in other tables. The portal does not make the B2C tab mandatory.
- What is a SAC?
- The code for services. It has 6 digits and starts with 99, for example 998314.
- Does this tool tell me the right code or the GST rate?
- No. It checks the shape and the depth only. The right code depends on what you sell, and the portal's Table 12 has a button to download its list of HSN and SAC codes.
