Questions people ask

What is the interest rate on late GST payment?
18% a year under Section 50(1) of the CGST Act. It is simple interest, counted by the day.
When is the 24% rate used?
Section 50(3) charges 24% a year on input tax credit that was wrongly or excessively claimed and also used. Credit that was claimed but not used does not attract it. Sources disagree on the rate for some wrongly availed credit, so confirm with a CA if your case turns on this.
How is GST interest calculated?
Tax × rate × days late ÷ 365. For ₹50,000 paid 30 days late at 18%, interest is about ₹739.73.
On which amount is interest charged?
On the tax you pay in cash after setting off input tax credit, not on the full liability. That has applied since 1 July 2017.
Is there a maximum on GST interest?
No. Unlike the late fee, interest has no cap.
Which days are counted?
From the day after the due date up to the day you pay.
